Pet Cancer Awareness Month

Pet Cancer Awareness Month is observed each November to raise awareness about cancer in pets and educate pet owners about early detection, treatment options, and preventative measures. Sponsored by various veterinary organizations and animal health groups, this month-long campaign emphasizes the importance of recognizing signs of cancer in pets—such as lumps, swelling, weight loss, or changes in behavior—and seeking prompt veterinary attention. It also highlights the advancements in veterinary oncology, from new treatments to supportive care that can improve a pet’s quality of life. The goal of Pet Cancer Awareness Month is not only to inform but to inspire support for ongoing research and resources that can help pets and their owners navigate this challenging diagnosis.

It's important to be observant and proactive if your pet shows any concerning changes, including:
  • Unexplained lumps or bumps that persist or grow.

  • Sores that don’t heal.

  • Sudden weight loss or loss of appetite.

  • Changes in behavior, such as increased fatigue or reluctance to move or play.

  • Unusual swelling in areas like the abdomen.

  • Difficulty eating, swallowing, or breathing.

  • Persistent lameness or stiffness.

  • Abnormal discharge from any body part (such as blood, pus, or fluid).

If your pet is exhibiting any of these signs, or if you have any concerns at all, it’s important to consult a veterinarian as soon as possible. Only a vet can perform the proper diagnostics, such as physical exams, imaging, and lab tests, to determine whether a pet has cancer or if the symptoms are related to another condition. Early detection can be crucial in managing your pet’s health.
